Can I use an Apple Watch with an Android phone, or a Galaxy Watch with an iPhone?

No. Apple Watch Series 11, Ultra 3, and SE 3 require an iPhone running modern iOS, while Wear OS watches (Samsung Galaxy Watch 8, Galaxy Watch Ultra, Google Pixel Watch 3, OnePlus Watch 3) require an Android smartphone. If you switch between iPhone and Android—or want platform independence—choose Garmin, COROS, Suunto, Polar, Amazfit, or Oura.

Do I need to pay a monthly subscription to get sleep and recovery scores?

Not on most smartwatches. Apple Watch, Garmin (Venu 3, Forerunner, Fenix 8), COROS, Suunto, Polar, Samsung Galaxy Watch, and Amazfit include all sleep, HRV, and training readiness analytics for $0/month. Google Pixel Watch 3 also unlocked Daily Readiness and Cardio Load without Fitbit Premium. Subscriptions primarily affect Oura Ring 4 ($5.99/mo) and Whoop 4.0 ($239/yr).

Is sapphire crystal worth paying extra for on a smartwatch?

Yes if you lift weights, hike around rock faces, or wear your watch 24/7 without a screen protector. Sapphire crystal (standard on Garmin Fenix 8, Apple Watch Ultra 3, Galaxy Watch 8, Galaxy Watch Ultra, OnePlus Watch 3, and Suunto Race) is virtually immune to everyday micro-scratches that quickly mark Ion-X or Gorilla Glass lenses.

Apple Watch Series 11

Strong critic consensus on sensor accuracy, battery endurance, and everyday software experience.

Editor's Take: The Apple Watch Series 11 remains the undisputed everyday smartwatch benchmark for iPhone owners, pairing its ultra-thin wide-angle LTPO3 OLED display and S11 SiP responsiveness with FDA-cleared sleep apnea notifications and rock-solid optical heart-rate tracking. Its 24-hour normal battery life still requires a quick daily top-up during your morning shower, and it won't pair with Android—but no rival matches its seamless watchOS app ecosystem, UWB car-key support, and wrist ergonomics.

Dual-frequency L1+L5 GPS and the upgraded BioActive sensor markedly improve outdoor run tracks and metabolic tracking, though non-Samsung Android users should note that ECG and sleep apnea alerts remain gated behind the Samsung Health phone app.

Delivering up to 8 days of battery life and the industry's most refined sleep staging, daytime stress, and cardiovascular age insights, its only real drawback is the mandatory $5.99/month Oura Membership.
