Is the Oura Ring 4 usable without the $5.99/month Oura Membership?

Barely. Without an active $5.99/month ($69.99/year) membership, the Oura app only displays three basic daily scores (Sleep, Readiness, Activity) with no historical trends, sleep staging breakdowns, HRV graphs, Daytime Stress, or Cardiovascular Age. If you want full data ownership with $0 monthly fees, buy the RingConn Gen 2, Ultrahuman Ring Air, or Samsung Galaxy Ring.

Which finger should I wear a smart ring on, and do I need a sizing kit?

Index, middle, or ring fingers work best because they provide strong arterial blood flow and stable contact. Smart ring sizes do NOT match standard jewelry sizes—always order the brand's sizing kit first and wear the plastic sizer for a full 24 hours (including overnight, when fingers naturally swell) before choosing your final titanium ring size.

Can a smart ring replace my GPS running watch?

Not for structured workouts. Smart rings lack built-in GPS and screens, and finger PPG sensors struggle with motion artifacts when your hands are swinging rapidly or gripping handlebars. Many athletes pair a Garmin/COROS watch for workouts with a smart ring for 24/7 sleep and recovery.

Oura Ring 4

The review score is high relative to street price. Prioritise seasonal deals and bundle discounts.

Editor's Take: The Oura Ring 4 cements Oura's lead at the top of the smart ring category by replacing the Gen 3's raised interior epoxy domes with a fully titanium interior and recessed 0.3mm sensors powered by 18-path Smart Sensing PPG. Delivering up to 8 days of battery life and the industry's most refined sleep staging, daytime stress, and cardiovascular age insights, its only real drawback is the mandatory $5.99/month Oura Membership.

Oura Ring Gen 3

The review score is high relative to street price. Prioritise seasonal deals and bundle discounts.

If you don't mind its three slightly raised interior sensor domes and 5-to-7-day battery life, it is the most affordable entry into the Oura ecosystem.

Its app translates overnight HRV, skin temperature, and sleep phases into actionable circadian phase alignment and stimulant/caffeine timing windows for $0/month, though its 4-to-6-day battery life trails RingConn and Oura Ring 4.

RingConn Smart Ring Gen 1

The review score is high relative to street price. Prioritise seasonal deals and bundle discounts.

While the slimmer Gen 2 doubles battery endurance and adds sleep apnea screening, the Gen 1 remains a reliable budget pick whenever discounted.

Amazfit Helio Ring

Solid review score, but value depends heavily on street price, phone OS ecosystem, battery expectations, and subscription costs.

Editor's Take: At $199 with zero monthly subscription fees, the Amazfit Helio Ring is designed as an affordable sleep-and-recovery companion—especially for athletes who already wear an Amazfit Balance, Active 2, or T-Rex watch during workouts. The Zepp app seamlessly merges wrist workout load with overnight finger HRV, SpO2, and EDA stress readings, though standalone users will note its shorter 4-day battery life and limited three-size (8, 10, 12) lineup.

Circular Ring Slim

Solid review score, but value depends heavily on street price, phone OS ecosystem, battery expectations, and subscription costs.

Editor's Take: At just 2.2mm thin and 2.0 grams, the Circular Ring Slim stands out as the only smart ring with an onboard haptic vibration motor—allowing it to wake you at your optimal light-sleep phase with a silent finger buzz and acknowledge tap navigation. Battery life in full Performance mode is a modest 2 to 3 days (up to 5 days in Eco mode), but its subscription-free Kira+ AI assistant and silent alarm give it a unique niche.
